Our 12 Top Activities To Make Your Beach Holiday In Wales An Unforgettable Experience Our 12 Top Activities To Make Your Beach Holiday In Wales An Unforgettable Experience
Allens Caravans

There’s something about the sea air that is innately reviving and reinvigorating. Sea air is full of negative ions – charged particles that are found in abundance in the spray that apparently improve our ability to absorb oxygen. A blast of fresh sea air can, literally, blow away the cobwebs (pollen) and clear the passages (lungs).

Many people return to our Aber Bay and Sunbeach holiday parks year after year to relax and re-energise. Whether lying on a beach and letting the world wash over you, or participating in every sandy, salty activity available, their beach locations allow you to lift your eyes to the horizon and clear your mind of everyday stress and overwhelm.

You may not be aware of the amazing variety of things you can do on beach holidays in Wales, so we have put together a guide to the best beach activities that will soon have you reaching for the holiday brochures.

There are truly some great beaches in Wales. Many of them are award winning, but that’s just the start.

Rock pooling on holiday

1. Rock pooling

This fun, free activity is the perfect beach activity for children and adults alike. All you need is some sturdy shoes and a curiosity to seek out some wild and weird creatures among the usual crabs. If rock pooling is your thing, Sunbeach offers some great opportunities for discovering local marine life.

2. Sandcastles

You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy building sandcastles. If you’re enjoying a family beach holiday, organise a competition between you as to who builds the best castle. The loser buys the ice creams (probably dad!) Both Aber Bay and Sunbeam have beautiful sandy beaches that offer the right conditions for the perfect sandcastle construction.

3. Fly a kite

It’s the simplest pleasures that are often the best. Flying a kit is one of those innocent pastimes that seem to have slipped into yesteryear. Our Welsh beaches are ideal for launching some truly spectacular flying spectacles. The expanse of space and the invigorating winds blowing on off Cardigan Bay form the perfect environment for kite flying – whether you’re a beginner or returning to an old skill.

4. Quaddleball

No – we hadn’t heard of it before either. Think paddle ball but with four or more people split into four teams. Each team occupies a square laid out in the sand in a foursquare. The ball is then hit between the four quads, with players in each team swapping in and out whenever it is their turn. The winner is, basically, the last man standing. Great fun for a family of four on a beach holiday in Wales, and even more fun for large parties of highly competitive kids, adults, friends… and dogs!

5. Yoga

For those wanting a more meditative approach to their beach holiday in Wales, the expanse of light and space lends itself to grounding yourself in the very nature of your environment. Start the morning in the best possible way by wandering down to the beach from your caravan park when everyone else is still snoozing, and having a reflective hour on the yoga mat, away from the demands of your family.

6. Dolphin spotting

Cardigan Bay is home to the UK’s largest population of Dolphins. In fact, some lucky dolphin seekers have been lucky enough to spot the occasional orca whale or humpback. The stunning sea views of Sunbeach and Aber Bay are the perfect location to do some dolphin spotting.

7. Walking

The old pastimes are the best… With over 870 miles of coastal pathways, you will not complete the whole thing in just a couple of weeks. Take your time exploring each section. Each part of the coastline will literally take you through some of the best and most beautiful beaches in Wales. Take a hike up Constitution Hill at Aber Bay to enjoy the stunning panoramic views. Head inland to the Cambrian Mountains near Sunbeach, and lose yourself in the endless skies and deep sense of peace and serenity.

8. Horse riding

Wales offers a plethora of beaches which are perfect for horse-riding. An experienced horse rider will enjoy the exhilaration of galloping along the shoreline.

9. Indulge in the fruits of the sea

As you would expect in a country that is surrounded by sea on three sides, the Welsh are skilled in preparing fish and seafood dishes in local restaurants. Seek out the recommended local eateries for the area where you are staying, and accompany it with a glass of locally brewed Welsh wine or beer.

10. Paddleboarding, surfing, sailing, swimming, canoeing…

Whatever mode of transport you like to use to get around the water, every beach in Wales will cater to your every need. For every bay that you discover, another will be just around the headland. For every hidden cove, another will be lurking. Get another perspective on Aber Bay and Sunbeach by floating out and exploring the coastline from the water.

11. Sand sailing

Pendine Sands in Carmarthenshire is well known as the location for the 1924 world land speed record attempted by Sir Malcolm Campbell, reaching a speed of 146.16mph. You may not get too close to it by taking out a land yacht, or sand sail, but you’ll certainly experience a similar level of exhilaration.

12. Enjoy an ice cream

After all that activity, we suggest you treat yourself to your favourite ice cream, find a quiet spot, and enjoy every mouthful.
