October Half Term in Wales: What's On Near Aber Bay and Sunbeach
October 12, 2026

October half term is the final chance of the year for a family caravan break before our Welsh parks close for the winter. The summer holiday crowds are gone, the coastal paths are quiet, and the autumn colours across Cardigan Bay and Snowdonia look great.
If you are planning an autumn break with the kids or bringing the dog along for long beach walks, here is what is happening around Aber Bay and Sunbeach this October half term.
What to do near Aber Bay Holiday Park
Aber Bay sits just north of Aberystwyth on the coast, putting you within easy reach of town attractions and scenic walks:
Aberystwyth Cliff Railway and Constitution Hill
Britain's longest electric cliff railway takes you up Constitution Hill from the northern end of Aberystwyth promenade. At the summit, you will find a historic camera obscura with panoramic views over Cardigan Bay, plus a café serving hot drinks while you watch the autumn swell come in.
The Vale of Rheidol Railway
This narrow-gauge steam railway runs from Aberystwyth town station deep into the wooded Rheidol Valley, finishing at Devil's Bridge waterfalls. Late October is one of the best times to ride it, with the valley woodlands turning bright orange and yellow.
Beach walks at Ynyslas and Borth
A few minutes up the road from Aber Bay, Ynyslas nature reserve features broad sand dunes and boardwalks looking out over the Dyfi estuary. At low tide along Borth beach, you can often see the remains of the ancient submerged forest exposed on the sand.
The Waterfront clubhouse
Back on park, our Waterfront clubhouse has an indoor heated swimming pool, a family restaurant, an arcade area, and a bar for relaxed evenings after a full day outside.
What to do near Sunbeach Holiday Park
Sunbeach sits right on the shoreline at Llwyngwril, on the edge of Snowdonia National Park:
Direct beach access
You can walk straight out of the park and onto the beach. October is ideal for beachcombing, pebble skimming, and walking dogs without summer restrictions.
Barmouth harbour and the Mawddach Trail
Just across the estuary lies Barmouth. You can walk across the historic timber railway bridge over the water, pick up fish and chips along the quayside, or cycle the level Mawddach Trail toward Dolgellau.
Talyllyn Railway at Tywyn
A short drive south brings you to Tywyn and the Talyllyn Railway, the world's first preserved heritage railway. The steam train runs past countryside and waterfalls up to Dolgoch, and the railway often runs special half-term family events.
Harlech Castle
Roughly half an hour north, Harlech Castle sits high on a rocky bluff overlooking the dunes. Children love climbing the towers and walking the restored battlements.
The Driftwood bar and heated pool
When the sea air gets chilly, head back to Sunbeach's indoor heated pool, adventure golf area, and The Driftwood clubhouse for food and evening drinks.
Practical tips for autumn breaks
- Pack waterproofs, fleeces, and sturdy boots. Coastal weather can change from bright autumn sun to sudden showers within an hour.
- Steam railways often run fewer services in October, so book your tickets online a few days ahead to get the time you want.
- All our rental holiday homes have modern double glazing and central heating, so you will come back to a warm home after spending the day outdoors.
Book your half-term break
October half-term dates fill up fast, especially for pet-friendly caravans. Check availability online and book early to secure your dates.
