Five Famous Caravanners | Latest News | Allens Caravans

Going on a caravan holiday is a staple of every British person’s childhood, with the majority of people having fond memories of going to a caravan holiday park and spending long summer evenings frolicking in the pool and going to the beach.

We welcome thousands of families to our parks every year, with each one enjoying all the luxuries of a caravan holiday – and there are many! From not having to worry about travelling abroad and all the associated costs and hassles that come with it (e.g. passports, parking the car, shuttle bus services, tourist tax and luggage fees), as well as the premium accommodation and state-of-the-art park activities to keep everyone entertained, it’s no wonder caravans are so popular!

It’s not just the general public who love caravans, though. There are numerous famous faces who can often be seen indulging in the pleasures of a caravan holiday, be it travelling in a VW campervan or staying in a residential park home. We’ve compiled a list of five celebrities who are known to dabble in caravanning, and you might just be surprised!

1. Chris Martin (Lead Singer of Coldplay)

By all accounts, Chris Martin is an A-list celebrity with some very high-profile friends, but he got his humble beginnings in and around caravans. His grandfather, John Martin, started Martins Caravans in Exeter in 1929. The business was passed down to his son, Anthony Martin, who in 1999 decided he wanted to sell the business because his own son’s band, Coldplay, was doing quite well. That son was Chris Martin, former husband of Gweneth Paltrow and high flying musician in one of Britain’s best performing bands.

Growing up around caravans, it was only natural that Chris Martin would have a soft spot for them, so it doesn’t come as a surprise to know that he is reportedly often found planning camping trips in a caravan, and he’s even said to have planned a trip with Beyonce and Jay-Z!

2. Nigel Mansell (Formula 1 World Champion)

When you think of Formula 1 drivers, you probably don’t think of them as being caravanners. After all, it doesn’t get much more fast-paced than F1, and it doesn’t get much slower than the relaxing pace of life associated with caravan holidays. Nevertheless, the 1992 Formula 1 world champion, Nigel Mansell, can often be found at Islawrffordd Caravan Park in North Wales. It’s reported that despite being a millionaire, Mansell continued to visit the park regularly after frequenting it during his childhood.

In fact, he’s such a keen visitor that he is said to have plans to open a restaurant at the park.

3. Lorraine Kelly (Television Host)

When you turn on the TV in the morning you’re likely to see Lorraine Kelly, and if you visit the Scottish Caravan Show, you might also see her there, too. Lorraine is reported to be a smitten caravanner, though it’s unclear whether she has her own caravan or not. Despite the questions surrounding her caravan ownership, she did open the aforementioned Scottish Caravan Show, so it’s safe to assume that she is a fan of the British holiday favourite.

4. Dame Helen Mirren (Academy Award Winning Actress)

Oscar, BAFTA, Tony, and Golden Globe award winner Dame Helen Mirren has the world at her fingertips when it comes to choosing where to holiday, but time and again she opts for her humble motor home over luxury beach resorts. It’s said that she enjoys being able to get away from city life, and her motorhome allows her to do just that. Motorhomes offer privacy and freedoms that brick and mortar villas/hotels do not, so it’s no wonder one of the most famous actresses in the world chooses to vacation in her own personal caravan when the dramas of A-list life get too much.

5. Frank Bruno (Boxing World Champion)

Frank Bruno is regarded as one of the best British boxers of all time, having won the WBC heavyweight world title in 1995 (amongst many other titles). He made his fortune and enjoyed a successful career, but it seems he, like the others on this list, enjoys the simple things in life, including caravanning. In 2016, Bruno purchased a luxury static caravan on the Isle of Sheppey for him and his family to enjoy. The park is rumoured to feature an arcade, gym, restaurant and sports bar – all the makings of a great family holiday by the sea!
